Beeper, a startup that reverse-engineered iMessage to deliver blue bubble messages to Android users, stated that there was an outage in the application in a post published on X on Friday. It looks like Apple is responsible for this. Users started seeing error messages when trying to send messages through the newly launched Beeper Mini, and messages were not being delivered.
The error message includes the following statements in red letters: “Could not search the server: The search request has timed out.”
Beeper CEO Eric Migicovsky answered the question about the Beeper Mini’s status with more details. When asked whether Apple had found a way to prevent the Beeper Mini from working, he said: “Yes, all the data shows this result.” said.
Migicovsky, who previously founded the smart watch Pebble, argued that Beeper Mini is not only for Android users who want to join their iMessage friends’ group chats, but also a safe space for iPhone users.
“This means that when you text a friend using Android, anyone can read the message,” Migicovsky said. Apple can read your messages, your phone carrier can read the message. Even Google can read your messages. Therefore, Beeper Mini actually increases the security of iPhones.” said.
Apple, on the other hand, sees iMessage as one of the key tools to connect users to its app and therefore will not create an iMessage-style app for Android. While there are hopes that EU regulations will try to make iMessage more widely available, news this week suggests iMessage will be exempt from those rules. This means there’s no reason why Apple shouldn’t try to shut down the Beeper Mini.
Migicovsky is not very happy with this turn of events. “I would be interested to hear why it makes sense to make security worse for iPhone users,” he said in his statement. He included his words.
Founded in 2020, the Beeper team was originally working on a multiplatform messaging goal and was renamed Beeper Cloud this week with the launch of Beeper Mini. Beeper Mini is a technology that allows Android users to send messages to iMessage users via iPhone for a certain amount per month.
It is currently unclear what the future of Beeper Mini will be.
