Ahead of the launch of PUBG’s new Rondo map, PUBG in-game production director Taehyun Kim talked about new features and the battle royale, which continues to be one of the most popular games on Steam despite stiff competition.
The largest map ever offered in PUBG, Rondo is an 8×8 battlefield that combines modern cityscapes with traditional beauties. This new terrain also offers features such as new vehicles and weapons.
“We added destructible bamboo, turntables, fireworks, birds, and fish to the new map to provide a fun and exhilarating experience,” Kim said. he explained. For the first time, PUBG features destructible terrain of any kind, and this addition seems to herald a big change in PUBG’s gameplay.
Rondo’s field is quite wide. In this regard, players will be helped by Blanc, a new vehicle designed to make this huge battlefield more traversable. Kim said Blanc vehicles perform similarly to SUVs.
It was wondered whether new features such as being able to destroy entire buildings or destroy some parts of the map would be added to old PUBG maps to improve gameplay. Kim explained that this mostly depends on player feedback. Taehyun Kim said, “We are closely examining players’ feedback regarding the destructible bamboo trees. We are exploring the possibility of adding features such as destructible entrances and hay bales. “Depending on players’ reactions and feedback, we may incorporate these features into existing maps.” said.
Regarding player feedback, PUBG currently has ten maps in total. This is the largest number of maps in any battle royale currently available. However, this many maps can cause problems.
Players have been actively complaining about matchmaking and map rotation, and Kim explains why it’s difficult to allow map selection: “Given the traffic and individual MMR, it’s difficult to provide map selection in all regions.” He also noted that PUBG Studios has shortened the rotation time between maps so that players do not have to wait so long to play the map of their choice.
However, map rotation is still a big concern for the studio. Kim said that Rondo is already the tenth map and map rotation, and fans have given a lot of feedback about it. Additionally, Kim said, “Map rotation is an inevitable choice, and we rotate maps differently for different regions. We don’t keep new maps in the rotation pool just because they’re new. Decisions will be made based on players’ feedback. As for Rondo, we will fix it for the first two to three months after release. “Thus, players will be able to freely try and get used to the new map.”
The game follows a pattern where new maps are released every year. Rondo is the first new PUBG map this year. Kim was asked if this renewal was a pattern that would continue in the future. Kim said in a statement on this issue: “Of course, we want to continue to offer new maps and new experiences to our players, but we can never compromise on quality as quantity increases. “This is at the core of everything we do.” said.
Although Rondo is a huge map, Kim stated that the studio also plans to offer some of Rondo’s locations through Intense Battle Royale and Team Deathmatch modes in future updates.
