- The new feature provides a stronger layer of security by replacing time-based one-time passwords, backup codes and SMS verification codes.
Social media giant Discord has taken a new step to increase security across the platform and reduce the risk of phishing. Discord has implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all accounts using WebAuthn-based security keys.
This update, which affects more than 500 million registered users, offers significant security benefits to users. WebAuthn replaces time-based one-time passwords, backup codes, and SMS verification codes to protect accounts within the platform.
Users can enable WebAuthn with the “Save Security Key” option under the “My Account” tab, which they can easily access from the Settings section. Thanks to this feature, users can further secure their accounts by using authentication methods such as Windows Hello, Apple Face ID or Touch ID.
The benefits of WebAuthn include additional protection against phishing, unpredictability, and ease of use. Thanks to this new feature, a physical device is required to log in to Discord accounts, which reduces the risk of credential theft.
This update to Discord makes users’ online experiences safer by providing stronger protection to their accounts. WebAuthn becomes even easier to use, especially with special integrations in mobile and desktop applications.
With this new feature, old MFA options continue to be available for users. Discord states that it will continue to improve its WebAuthn-based passwordless login feature in the future.
