- Elon Musk announced that Neuralink company gave sight to blind monkeys with its brain chip technology.
- This development shows that the product called Blindsight works in monkeys and may surpass normal human vision in the future.
- The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the company’s first trial last year, allowing the development of an implant that inserts 64 flexible threads into the brain to record and transmit movement intention signals.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, recently claimed that his company Neuralink has successfully restored the sight of blind monkeys using brain chip technology. Announced the development on the X platform.
He noted that the new product, called Blindsight, has already worked in monkeys, and although its initial resolution is comparable to older Nintendo graphics, it could eventually surpass normal human vision.
Musk emphasized that the Neuralink device did not harm any monkeys and compared this to previous controversies about animal testing.
This success is a follow-up to Neuralink’s previous product, Telepathy, which allowed users to control computers with their minds. Earlier this year, Musk reported that a paralyzed patient implanted with a Neuralink chip could control a computer mouse cursor with his mind, demonstrating the technology’s potential to help people with disabilities.
The FDA approved the first trial of Neuralink in May last year. It allowed the company to implant 64 flexible threads into the brain to record and transmit signals regarding movement intention. These threads are implanted by a robot due to their thin nature, allowing the implant to communicate with an application that deciphers the user’s intent. The implant is powered by a wireless rechargeable battery, marking a significant advance in brain-machine interface technology.
